Keep in mind, however, that the study does not state if these degrees are related to Computer Science. In fact, 12.73% of software developers have some sort of university education without earning a degree. 

So, if self-taught programmers and engineers are increasingly common and landing jobs, why is a computer science degree still relevant?

Why Is A Computer Science Degree Important?

As a Computer Science Engineering student myself, I can admit that a degree has its advantages and disadvantages.

Advantages

1. Job Security

A computer science degree can lead to higher salaries and greater job security. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the median annual wage for computer and information technology occupations was $97,430 in May 2021, which is significantly higher than the median annual wage for all occupations in the U.S.

Furthermore, the demand for computer science professionals is projected to grow much faster than the average for all occupations, which means that graduates with a computer science degree are likely to have good job prospects.

2. Structured Education

A degree provides a structured education in computer science concepts and programming languages. This education can be critical in helping students develop a deep understanding of the underlying principles of computer science, such as algorithms, data structures, and computer architecture.

Furthermore, computer science programs often provide students with opportunities to work on real-world projects, which can help them develop practical skills and gain experience working in teams. 

3. Salary

It is also worth noting that having a degree can lead to higher salaries for software engineers. A report by Glassdoor found that the average base pay for a software engineer with a bachelor’s degree is $87,500 per year, compared to $79,625 for those without a degree. This indicates that while a degree is not necessary, it can lead to better pay and job opportunities in some cases.

Disadvantages

1. Cost

University tuition fees can be quite high, and many students end up taking out loans to pay for their education. In fact, according to College Tuition Compare, the average tuition of a Computer Science degree is $32,635 for undergraduate programs and $25,678 for graduate programs

2. Practical Curriculum

Some universities focus more on theory than practical application, which means that students may not develop the practical skills needed to be successful in the industry. Furthermore, the pace of technological change in the field of computer science can be quite fast, and some university programs may not be able to keep up with the latest developments.

What Are The Qualifications Needed To Become A Software Engineer?

1. Programming Language

Most software engineering positions require proficiency in one or more programming languages, such as Java, Python, C++, or JavaScript. These languages are used to develop software applications, and software engineers need to have a strong understanding of their syntax, data structures, and algorithms.

2. Experience

Experience is another important qualification for software engineers. Many employers prefer candidates who have experience working on software development projects, either through internships, co-op programs, or personal projects. This experience demonstrates a candidate’s ability to work with a team, develop software applications, and solve problems that arise during the development process.
